The obesity epidemic, time to be part of the solution

I randomly came across an article ( ) this morning that inspired me to bust out a quick post. There has been much press in the U.S about the spiraling obesity epidemic. To be sure it is a serious problem not only in terms of economic costs to us as a country, but in terms of human costs. Unfortunately, the debate has shifted into a blame game where personal responsibility is no longer part of the discussion. Like many issues where placing blame becomes the center of attention we are quick to lose sight of the where the focus really belongs. In this particular case that is what can we as individuals do to become part of the solution.
  • Where did we go wrong, how did we as a country get so far off the tracks with our habits to cause such a shift in obesity rates. I will not use this forum to go into detail about the statistics other than to offer the following quick points:
  • Approximately 34% of U.S. adults are obese.*
  • In 2008 the medical cost of obesity was 147 BILLION dollars. For frame of reference, that is a cost of $490 to every man, woman and child in the U.S.*
  • Obesity related health issues such as non Type 1 Diabetes are among the leading, preventable causes of death among U.S. citizens.*
  • No state had an obesity rate of less than 20%!*
  • In 1990 the obesity rate in the U.S. was less than 15%.**

So… Why the seismic shift? Experts argue many factors from eating and exercise habits to poverty levels are to blame. Some cities have even gone so far as to force businesses to limit portion sizes (soft drinks) and post nutritional and caloric information on menu’s. While these efforts may not be entirely off base, one thing has been conspicuously absent from the discussion, PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY.

In my opinion this epidemic did not happen by chance, more so I believe that it is the sum total of a societal change in attitudes. I don’t believe that we can lay blame on any one aspect of the contributory factors that lead to obesity. This was more of a subtle shift. I would point to small things that at first may have seemed innocuous enough. For example, 1990 represents the start of the home video console sales explosion. The number of these units sold in the U.S. began to skyrocket. It was also in the early part of the 1990’s that the country went on an unprecedented period of economic growth leading to a gross increase in consumer spending. The late 1990’s to early 2000’s saw the arrival and explosion of the internet.

On the surface none of these things by themselves would jump out as the smoking gun. If however we look big picture it would be easy to see how these things might lead us to become more, shall we say “leisurely” as a population. More than ever before recreation moved indoors. Food because a convenience rather than a necessity ( note the rise in “competitive eating” events… I still have to chuckle at viewing these individuals as athletes. Sorry guys, I don’t see it. ). No longer did most children exercise their bodies. Let’s face it you can’t burn too many calories parked on your but utilizing only your thumbs. It is this perfect storm of factors that have been at the forefront of the exponential increase in obesity rates.

That being said, what can we do to help? This is where personal responsibility comes into play. If people are content to sit idly by while they wait for the government to solve the problem we are doomed. The government has consistently demonstrated a stunning ineptitude in dealing with most issues. The solution begins with each and every one of us. We have to begin to shift the landscape towards a healthier lifestyle. We need to once again become active participants in our children’s lives. Give the electronic babysitter a break. GET OUTSIDE, GET ACTIVE! Help young people see there is an actual life awaiting them outside. Encourage them to become participants instead of spectators.

For our own part as adults, the same can be said. We need to shut off the computers, put down the smartphones and just take time to reconnect with the outside world. We need to start to consider the choices we make with regard to our diets. I’ll be the first to admit sometimes I’m just flat out to lazy to cook a health meal. I get it, we are all busy these days. Putting in place better time management techniques where our eating habits our concerned can help. Cook larger portions of food that can be reheated over a period of days. Eat more leafy greens, a salad takes less time to make than a trip to McDonald.

At the end of the day, the march of the obesity (or slow waddle if you will) is apt to continue if we don’t take personal responsibility for our part in the solution. Take some time today to just consider what I’ve written here. I hope that it motivates at least one person to take action and make changes in their own life.

Skydiving Miami, the skinny…

As promised I am going to share an update on my experience this weekend skydiving in Miami. I want to say first off a big thanks to the guys at Miami Skydiving Center ( ). These guys were total professionals and the whole process could not have gone more smoothly. From start to finish they make sure you are totally comfortable, explain exactly what is going to take place in great (but easy to understand) detail and really seem to know their stuff. Not once did I have a doubt that things were going to go off without a hitch and I was not disappointed.

In a word, the actual jump itself was INCREDIBLE! I am not even slightly exaggerating here. I had an amazing time and as my instructor told me would be the case before the jump it is something you can’t put into words. Mind you I’m not often at a loss for words. However, skydiving really leaves you grasping for the vocabulary to sufficiently do the experience justice. If you have ever thought that you wanted to go skydiving I enthusiastically suggest you just do it.

With that out of the way, here is the skinny on how things went down:

Check in, this is just like checking in at a hotel. Name, driver’s license, credit card to pay any outstanding balance for your trip and to purchase extras. A word on extras, you will want pictures and video of your jump. There are two simple reasons for this, first this is your first time participating in this incredible sport, you owe it to yourself to record the experience. Second, should things not go exactly as planned your loved ones will have evidence for any legal action they may wish to initiate…LOL  Just kidding, but no really, you never know. Shit happens!

Next we moved onto a quick course to familiarize us with tandem skydiving. This part takes from 30-40 minutes and is pretty straightforward. There truly is not much to know here as you will be partnered with a trained professional who will be doing all the heavy lifting and controlling your jump. Your responsibility will boil down to listening to some very simple instructions and trying not to screw them up.

Now you will be paired up with your instructor. They will take some time to further discuss the specifics of the jump, fit you with a harness and generally shoot the shit until it’s time to take off. In my case this was kind of amusing… I am 6’3″ 210 lbs.. My instructor was somewhere in the neighborhood of 5’6″ 155 lbs. This of course was by design as there are weight considerations. As he put it… “I’m the only one they could pair with you so we don’t end up meat pies on the ground”… not exactly comforting, but amusing…LOL

Takeoff time, this is when shit gets real… I’ll admit I had some butterfly’s about this time walking to the plane and as we ascended. During this time… there will be some final briefing as to how things will go down and some reminders on the key points once you exit the aircraft.

The moment of truth, jump time. With my group I volunteered to go first (no I’m not some fearless bad ass, there were some younger girls and their parents and there was no way I was letting them go before me;). We slid over to the door and with my instructor strapped to my back got in position with my feet on a rail just outside the door and held onto the handle above. He yelled in my ear, “you ready to do this”, I’m pretty sure I responded audibly “yeah let’s go”, but it’s possible I just nodded my head affirmatively. With this we just rolled forward out the door and into the blue sky’s above Miami. Per my pre-jump instructions I arched my back with my legs bent backward at a 90°  angle. We immediately stabilized while hurtling towards earth at 160MPH give or take. As I said earlier… The feeling is inexplicable other than to say AMAZING! You are just hauling ass falling from the sky, your heart pounding, wind howling and pulling at you. Any attempt at a smile, which to be honest your face will be fixed into, resembles more like a dog with it’s face outside the window of a moving car.

Then, just like that, the instructor pulls the ripcord deploying you chute. I’ll be honest, this was the beginning of my least favorite part of the experience. Think of how it feels when you have to brake suddenly in a car and the seat belt locks up. Now imagine that same sensation in the region of your crotch. In a word it was unpleasant. From there on out it is a leisurely circling flight path back to terrafirma. I’m not sure if it’s my weight that made this so unpleasant, but it was extremely uncomfortable to dangle by my crotch for what seemed like a very long time.

Then we reached the ground which despite the instructors efforts to slow our decent seemed to rise far too rapidly up to meet us. Per the pre-jump instructions I lifted my legs and let him control our landing… This basically amounts to being dumped, from a decent height, directly on your ass and skidding to a halt.

Despite the parts I was not a fan of… The experience was amazing and I would do it again in a minute. I would also tell anyone who ever thought about it just make reservations and go. There are Groupons out there all the time for discounted jumps. Hope this motivates you to get out there and do it. Skydiving In Miami This Weekend!

Bucket list item about to be checked off! I made arrangements to do a tandem jump with the Miami Skydiving Center ( )tomorrow.

I am super pumped about this jump… I’ve been wanting to do this for years and finally got a few friends to take the plunge, LITERALLY, with me. I’ve been snowboarding off piste in the Rockies, Sierras and the Wasatch Range, Taught Scuba in the Caribbean for a year, free dove to 100 feet in the Blue Hole in Belize, shark diving in the Bahamas and bungee jumped off the Royal Gorge Bridge in Colorado. I’ve done countless other hazardous and flat out stupid things, but this is the one I’ve been waiting for.

Whitewater rafting, the nuts and bolts of it

I have been whitewater rafting on the Kern River, near the giant sequoias in California and on the South Fork of the American River near Coloma, CA. I can say unequivocally, it is an awesome experience. I can also say that it can be super dangerous if you don’t go with experienced and well trained guides. I made this mistake on the South Fork and I will tell you that unpleasant does not begin to describe the experience. Enough of that for the moment (I’ll recount the experience a little later)… This piece is geared towards the novice who is just considering getting on the river.

The term “whitewater” refers very simply to water that flows rapidly over irregular surfaces creating surface disturbances and flow alterations. “Surface irregularities” is kind of a catch all term that covers, boulders, sharp drop offs (think underwater cliffs, some small, some disturbingly large), downed trees (more on this later as well) and a variety of other fun underwater hazards that create the whitewater you see when you look at a river.

Whitewater rivers are defined by the level of “roughness” in classes that range from the smoothest at class I to the roughest (and potentially deadly) class VI which should only be attempted by experts. Whitewater rafting is a challenging sports that requires a stout physical effort. Make no mistake, this is NOT a leisurely pleasure cruise… Think more along the lines sliding on your a#! down a sheet of ice on the side of a mountain, there are no breaks… All you will be doing is steering and trying your best to stay in your chosen watercraft. Trust me, I saw the videos before hand just like many of you have or will, I saw the smiles and it looked hella fun! This is hard work and staying in the boat is not as easy as it looks or as they tell you it will be. Staying in the boat will rely on the experience of your guide, the cooperation of the other folks in your raft and frankly a little bit of luck.

As far as your choice of craft to tackle this activity there are a few options, but for our purposes I’m only going to mention two of them, a raft or a kayak. There are benefits and drawbacks to both of these watercraft so it’s really a matter of preference. Kind of like choosing between firing squad or hanging. Just Kidding! It’s really not that bad. If you take nothing else from this post, remember this… RESPECT THE RIVER!!! If you don’t I can guarantee you it will come down on you from great height and very hard. You will not be happy I can promise you. So listen to your guide, wear your safety gear at all times, work with your raft mates (or kayaking partner as the case may be) and above all enjoy it. This is really fun sh#t!!!

Some key points:

  • Crafts used to navigate white water can range in size and shape. The most common crafts utilized are multi-person rafts and kayaks(both 1 and 2 person).
  • As noted previously, rivers can range in difficulty from class I – class VI. It is important to note that river conditions can change rapidly and that one river may have classes that span a wide range of conditions. This is important to recognize and highlights why novices should always use reputable guides.
  • Because rafts, kayaks and canoes carry a great deal of momentum and are frequently moving at high speed it is critical that participants receive proper safety training and wear appropriate protective gear. Mandatory gear should include flotation vests and helmets.
  • Be it a raft or kayak, there crafts can and will capsize from time to time! You are careening down a body of water that is full of above and below water objects, namely large rocks. It should be very obvious to even the greenest rookie the hazard these obstructions present.  While these occurrences are a distinct possibility with proper training and techniques taught by rafting outfitters the risk can be minimized.
  • Not to over dramatize the potential hazards inherent in this activity, but, fatalities can and do occur. It is important to recognize your own limitations. If you are not comfortable in the water or can’t swim this might not be the activity for you.

NOTE: This is by no means the be all and end all of information regarding the sport of whitewater rafting. If you want to learn more you should visit or both are outstanding sources where you can learn more.

I said earlier I would share a little bit about my own experience. Let me start with this…  I had an amazing time when I went out with an experienced outfitter. On two trips down the same river I only ended up in the water once and it was only for a short time. When I chose to go down the South Fork of the American without a guide (we rented from an outfitter and were given video briefing on the hazards we would encounter) I ended up in the water for a much longer period of time. Rather than bore you with the entire tale I will highlight:

  • Fact, there is no way that you can possibly remember all the potential hazards in a river you have never been on before no matter how thorough the briefing may seem.
  • Conditions on a given river may vary widely and change during the course of a trip. My journey began on a relatively tame class III river and ended on something approaching class V (the South Fork has dam controlled releases, one of which occurred while I was on river… I did not know this would occur before hand).
  • A 2 person kayak requires both people working in complete harmony and responding to obstacles quickly without hesitation. Most people do not spend enough time together in kayak’s to accomplish this. If you and your boat mate are not in complete sync bad things are apt to happen.
  • Falling out of your water craft in the rapids in class IV – V rapids flat out sucks. Think being tossed into a gigantic washing machine full of rocks. I have taught scuba diving and was a competitive swimmer… All of this means exactly zero when you are pitched into churning rapids. All you can do is try to avoid the largest obstacles, keep your feet out in front of you and try to guide yourself towards the shore as quickly as possible. I should note, this will likely not be possible until you have come out of the rapids. I can’t highlight this enough, BEING IN THE RAPIDS OUTSIDE OF THE SAFETY OF YOUR CRAFT ABSOLUTELY SUCKS!
  • The end result of my experience… My boat mate and I both made it safely (albeit very tired, bruised an extremely sore) to shore. Of course we were on separate sides of a river, in a canyon on a remote stretch of wilderness river. This is also not good. We had no boat, no oars and were very unhappy to say the least. Fortunately another outfitter came thru and gave us a lift down the remainder of the river where our kayak and equipment was waiting for us.

Moral of the story… If you are not an experienced paddler, GO OUT WITH A GUIDE!

Before signing up for any trip it is important that you do your homework. Research the operators in the area you are traveling to. Use the internet, look at Yelp reviews, search Google for company information and news regarding prospective tour operators… Bottom line you do not want to trust your safety to an operator that has a history of accidents. Look for companies that use newer equipment and maintain it properly. Ask about the qualifications of the guides and their experience level. All of these simple steps can make the difference between an amazing outing on the river or a spin cycle under the waters surface ending with a head injury. All that being said, the sport is relatively safe and fatalities relatively rare when compared to other “extreme” sports. If water based activities and being in the wilderness appeal to you, do your home work and make your reservations, you won’t regret it. Happy Paddling!

About the Snake River Headwaters

The Snake River Headwaters are a mecca for Wyoming water activities. Famous for its pristine waters and unique geology, the river’s banks and surrounding wilderness also attracts a great many wildlife enthusiasts and bird watchers for the abundance of rare animals that call it’s shores home. For example, some approximately 700 pairs of raptors makes nest in each spring along the miles of river canyon. Aside from the raptors, other species include the Northern Harrier, Golden Eagle, American kestrel, Owls, Prairie Falcons not to mention many of our four legged friends as well. Despite the incredible abundance of natural beauty surrounding the  Snake River Headwaters, the preservation of it’s beauty was not always secure. That is until grass roots efforts combined with the legislative efforts of the late Senator from Wyoming Craig Thomas pushed the government to act. While it did not happen during his lifetime, Senator Thomas’ vision was realized with the designation of the Snake River Headwaters as part of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System in 2009. President Obama made this possible when he signed an Omnibus Public Lands Act which included the Snake River Legacy Act of which Thomas was the author.

The newly designated protected river begins at its source in Yellowstone National Park and flows thru Grand Teton National Park, Alpine Canyon, Bridger-Teton National Forest ending approximately 31 miles away at the Palisades Reservoir. The designated, protected area also includes major tributaries; Buffalo Fork, Gros Ventre, Hoback, and Greys River, along with a number of smaller tributaries which make up this unique watershed.

While the area surrounding the Snake River Headwaters is well known for the abundance of outdoor activities  what is not well known is the area was also once the home of the Nez Perce and Shoshone Tribes. Oral history has it that the name of the river comes from an encounter of a white explorer with the local tribes. While asking a local tribe member what they called the river, they used sign language by moving hands in swimming motion which was interpreted as snake, hence came the name of the river. Whether this is accurate or not is anyone’s guess.

Well over 100,000 visitors come to run the rapids of the Snake River and its tributaries which include some of the nation’s most outstanding whitewater resources. However, as a result of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers designation some portions of the river are now off limits to paddlers. These areas include the portions of the river which run thru Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. Despite these restrictions the area still offers many outstanding opportunities to tackle this sometimes challenging river. If you are traveling to the area you can visit sites like for more information on booking rafting trips. Keep in mind water levels will dictate the availability of whitewater excursions.

If you aren’t the adventurous type, don’t worry. The area surrounding the Snake River Headwaters provides many an opportunity for more serene pursuits. Fishing on the river is world class and as previously mentioned the abundance and variety of wildlife is unmatched. So whether you are looking for some pulse pounding whitewater running  or a peaceful hike in the wilderness the Snake River Headwaters will fit the bill.
